Collecting materials on the subject of lumber industry is one of the strengths of the Shaw Historical Library. Oregon is considered the number one timber producer in the nation. Klamath Basin development was closely tied to the logging business. Commercial logging in the Klamath Basin began in the 2nd half of the 19th century and continues to this day.
Numerous logging companies sprung up during this period: Weyerhaeuser Timber Company, Pelican Bay Lumber Company (first large-scale lumber operation in the region), Modoc Lumber Company, Kesterson Lumber Company, Solomon Butte Lumber Company, Shaw Bertram Lumber Company, Ewuana Box Company and Big Lakes Box Company. Many private companies relied on harvesting timber from the Klamath Indian Reservation.
