1. Go to Google Dataset Search at datasetsearch.research.google.com
2. Try simple keywords first, then add or remove keywords and run additional searches to change the scope of your search until you find what you need.
2. Use the tools at the top of the screen to limit by currency, format, usage rights, topic, and cost. Try the Free limiter to see only free datasets.
3. Use the blue button to go to the site hosting the data to learn more about it. In this example, you'll see that not much information is posted about the dataset. That's why it's important to run multiple searches and search broadly to find datasets that might pertain to your topic.
Use the site: operator at the end of your search. If you're not comfortable typing it out on your own, copy and paste the following limiter at the end of your Google Dataset search:
site:data.gov
You can change "data.gov" to the domain of any website that you believe hosts datasets. For example, site:ieee-dataport.org will search all the datasets hosted at the IEEE dataport at ieee-dataport.org. Note: you do not need to include "www" at the beginning of the URL when using the site operator, just the site name and domain (e.g. .org, .gov, .com).
In the fillable assignment document that you downloaded, complete the activities under Google Dataset Search, Prompt: 1.
If you don't yet have your fillable assignment, open the Searching for Datasets:Assignment Questions document, go to File -> Download, and download a copy in .docx format.
